The problem of universals in cross-cultural studies: Insights from Sámi animal melodies (yoik)

چکیده
This article offers a critique of the notion “universals” in cross-cultural studies on music and emotions based empirical observations philosophical arguments. The material comes from experiments with songs evoking animals belonging to Indigenous Sámi “yoik” tradition. Participants Belgian Ardenne untrained yoik ( N = 114, age 4–79) listened recordings tried guess which animal was evoked. While their scores were significantly above chance level, additional data about own environment relationships illustrate that interpretations terms would obscure interrelational processes (productive or unproductive) “misrecognitions” at work during experiments. By analogy, this illustrates need for down-to-earth approach acknowledges creative role experimental designs laboratory conditions production universals. may imply move away nature/culture divide renewed attention subjects postcolonial context, aim informing us entanglement human musicality “relational places” productive biases these offer relate across different environments.
